Wood used is hickory. One piece of wood was used in making this plate. Once back is turned to shape, wood is burned with a touch in Japanese burning wood technique called Shou Sugi Ban.. Soft grain in the wood is burned more than the hard grain in wood. A wire brush is used to scrub the wood, then liming wax is rubbed into the wood and turns the hard grain grey. This process and repeated on the front of the plate.
