Butterfly Queen Original Oil Painting by Martha Dodd

“Butterfly Queen”  is an original oil on canvas painted during the spring of 2021 on Sanibel Island, Florida.

Martha has previously painted two others in this series, one entitled “Queen Conch” (sold), and one called “Queen Bee”. Martha has had a long interest in painting fantasy subjects such as mermaids, fairies, and more.

Her Process:

Her process begins with a hand-stretched, toned canvas. She then creates a monochromatic rendering of her subject, followed by layers of color. Once dry, she applies Gamvar Varnish, a well known and revered painting varnish with archival qualities.

About Martha Dodd

Martha grew up in Ohio, the daughter of a doctor and an art teacher. She attended the Ohio State University and earned her BS in Animal Science. After working a few years in the horse industry as an equine physical therapist, she turned her attention to art.

Martha worked as a hired artist at a commercial art company for 5 years, then went on her own as a free lance artist. Much of her work at that time was creating murals.

While Martha still creates murals, she has made a career out of fine art and commissions for portraits and more.

Her work can be found in homes and businesses all over South Florida. Her work has been published many times in various magazines such as Florida Design, Naples Illustrated, Gulf Shore Magazine, the N Magazine, and more recently in the Gulf and Main Magazine.

Martha spends her summers traveling abroad in places such as Europe, Australia, and South America. She takes the opportunity to study art in museums and points of interest while there.
